Have you suffered that sinking feeling when you accidentally deleted a file on your network, or clicked Save when you meant to click Save As? If Riverbank is managing your network, you should be able to recover lost files using a feature called Previous Versions.
With Previous Versions you can:
1. Recover a file or folder that was accidentally deleted. Recover it to its original location or open a previous version and copy it to another location.
2. Recover from accidentally overwriting a file. Just recover the previous version of the file.
3. Roll back to a previous version of a file.
Recover a deleted file
To recover a deleted file, use the following procedure:
1. In Windows Explorer or My Computer navigate to the folder in which the deleted file had been stored.
2. Position the cursor over a blank space in the folder.
3. Right-click the mouse and select Properties from the bottom of the menu. Select the Previous Versions tab. You can see an example of the tabs below. (NB If you don’t see the Previous Versions tab, please contact Riverbank.)
4. Select the version of the folder that contains the file before it was deleted, and then click View.

5. View the folder and select the file that will be recovered.
6. Drag and drop, or cut and paste, the shadow copy to the desktop or folder on the end user’s local machine.
Recover an overwritten or corrupted file
Recovering an overwritten or corrupted file is easier than recovering a deleted file because the file itself can be right-clicked instead of the folder. To recover an overwritten or corrupted file use the following procedure:
1. Right-click the overwritten or corrupted file and click Properties.
2. Select Previous Versions.
3. If you want to view the old version, click View. To copy the old version to another location, click Copy... To replace the current version with the older version, click Restore.
Recover a folder
To recover a folder use the following procedure:
1. Position the cursor so that it is over a blank space in the folder that will be recovered.
2. Right-click the mouse, select Properties from the bottom of the menu, and then select the Previous Versions tab.
3. Choose either Copy or Restore. Choosing Copy will allow you to choose where to place a copy of the Previous Version folder. It will not overwrite the original. Choosing Restore enables the user to recover everything in that folder as well as all subfolders. This should be used with caution as it will “roll-back” the entire folder and you will lose any work created since the Previous Version date.
How it works
Your file server (Windows Server 2003 or later) takes periodic snapshots of your data. The snapshots can be stored on the same server (for minimum cost) or on a separate server (for maximum protection). Depending on how the system is configured, it can reduce the potential data loss from one day to about an hour.
