How it works
Software on your server selects the data to be backed up, and encrypts it. The encrypted data is then sent to a remote server.
In addition to a secure backup you also get a self-service restore facility. If someone accidentally deletes a file they just log on to the data backup centre via their web browser, and restore the file. Because the backup store is Internet-based, it’s available anywhere. It doesn’t matter if your computer gets stolen in Birmingham or Bermuda; you just download your data from the backup store to a replacement computer, and carry on from where you left off. You can’t do that with any other form of backup.
The software is also very smart. Instead of backing up entire files it just sends the blocks of data that have changed, making the backup as small and as fast as possible.
Increasing broadband speed makes online backup suitable for network data stores of up to around 100GB. Because only the changes are backed up each night, it is the rate of change that’s more important than the total volume of data. Online backup can also handle server-based databases including Exchange and SQL Server.
The Riverbank online backup system gives you a 60-day backup history. All your files are permanently protected, but the backup history means that you can recover different versions of a file up to 60 days ago.
