r1265: Exchange 2000 off-line backup batch file installation

Exchange 2000 off-line backup batch file installation

Problem

You have the Riverbank batch file for off-line backup of Exchange 2000 Server.

Applies To

Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

Solution

1. Rename the file to have the extension .BAT. Copy it to a folder called Batch on drive C:
2. Create a folder on a disk drive on the server that has plenty of room. The folder is called \ESBackup.
3. Edit the batch file in Notepad. You will see that it has three sections: (i) Stop the Exchange services, (ii) Copy the Exchange databases and (iii) start the Exchange services.
4. Check the list of services on your server. Check that all the Microsoft Exchange services running on your computer are listed in the batch file.
5. If you need to add any services to the batch file, they must be in the correct place. The stop and start order is important.
6. Identify the Exchange databases on your server.
7. Edit the COPY lines in the batch file so that it will find the Exchange database files.
8. Match the drive letter for the ESBackup folder to the drive used on the server.

You now need to temporarily disable the COPY lines to test the batch file.

9. REM out the COPY lines in the batch file.
10. Add a PAUSE line to the end of the batch file.
11. Save the batch file.
12. Warn users that the e-mail will be off for a few minutes.
13. Run the batch file to test it. The Exchange services should go off, then go on again. The batch file should stop at the end so you can check that there were no errors.

Now remove the changes that you put in for testing.

14. If all's well, edit the batch file and remove the REMs on the COPY lines. Remove the PAUSE from the end of the batch file.
15. Save the batch file.
16. If users don't mind being without e-mail for about 20 minutes, run the batch file to check that the correct files are copied to x:\ESBackup. Don't forget to check that all the Exchange Services have restarted ok.

Finally, create a scheduled task to run the batch file.

17. Add a scheduled task to run the batch file at about 4am on Sunday, to minimise inconvenience to users.
18. After the batch file runs for the first time, check that recent files have been copied into x:\ESBackup, and that all the Exchange Services have restarted ok.
