The Microsoft Surface was the tablet-cum-laptop that seemed to do everything except sell. The only people you saw using the Surface 1 and the Surface 2 were hapless Microsoft employees who were obliged to put a brave face on things. But things could be changing for the Surface 3.
Last week I was at our regular HTG peer group meeting – 20 IT business leaders in a room. Seven of the 20 were using a Surface. A year ago these tech leaders were choosing iPads. Now only four of them were equipped with iPads. The consensus from those choosing Surface was that it covers everything – it really does replace desktop PC, laptop and iPad with a single device. And with more improvements coming in the summer with the arrival of the Microsoft Surface 4, it could be the beginning of the Surface era.
