It’s nowhere near Halloween but apparently it’s time to worry about Scareware, random e-mail threats to your reputation or about your health. If you get an unsolicited e-mail telling you that you have cancer, threatening to expose you as a paedophile or telling you that you have been making illegal downloads, here is what you do:

  1. Don’t panic.
  2. Remember that it is just scareware.
  3. Go to the Delete button and press it.
  4. NEVER open any attachment that comes with the e-mail. That is where the real threat lies.

There are some genuinely unpleasant people out there who are trying to separate you from your money. Whatever the topic of their scary e-mail, what they probably want to do is to encrypt or disrupt your PC and get money from you to reinstate it.

The Delete button is the cheaper and safer option.
