The Hanspree Micro PC is a new piece of tech that turns your everyday television into a fully-fledged computer. Essentially a mini computer on a stick that you plug into the HDMI port of a TV. It’s already proving popular for consumers and businesses alike. I recently got my hands on one for a couple of days; here’s my thoughts.

The Micro PC has a very thought out design in practicality and, for what it is, its performance is a surprise. 2GB of RAM and a 32GB SSD for something that can plug into the side of your TV is more than you need for using a computer on a big screen. It’s easily enough to run your usual office applications and fire off a few emails.

I tested it here at Riverbank for a general PC setup and I couldn’t fault it. It installed software very quickly and was very efficient. The Micro PC even had all of Riverbank crowding round the screen to see how it was working. It has a clear, crisp picture and when opening applications such as PowerPoint, there is no delay at all.

On Amazon it ships with a retail price of £130 so it’s significantly cheaper than your traditional PC. Of course to truly get a normal computing experience you need to buy a keyboard and mouse. It also gives you a Micro SD slot so you can easily add in more storage if you reach its 32GB limit.

On the downside it is simply not powerful enough to compete with a full desktop or laptop. It’s only got two USB ports so once you plug in your keyboard and mouse (you will need wireless) you’re out of space. Multitasking noticeably slows it down so you wouldn’t want to do much video editing on it. Wireless speeds are also limited due to the adapter.

However, I still highly recommend a Micro PC to run presentations on welcome screens as they remove the need for clunky computers which get in the way. It would also be highly useful in meetings. It would even make the office look tidier as it just hides away!
